Elissa Johnson-Green is Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator of the Program in Music Education in the Department of Music at University of Massachusetts Lowell. She is the creator and Project Lead of the EcoSonic Playground Project (ESPP) (https://sites.uml.edu/ecosonic_project/), a community engaged, inclusive program focused on immersive-integrated learning in music, sustainability, STEM, and design thinking for children of all ages. Since 2016, she has implemented 18 ESPP programs in the US, Canada, and Ireland. She has received consistent funding for this work, including a Research Grant from the International Society for Music Education, a University of Massachusetts Sustainability Grant, and grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, the Boston Mayor’s Office, and University of Massachusetts Lowell. Elissa received an Ed.D. in Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she studied early childhood musical and general development. She has over 20 years of classroom teaching experience; much of that time with children birth – age 8. Her research has focused on music in human development, music use in families raising young children, children's musical lives and musical thinking, and immersive learning in music education. She has published widely on these topics and has presented papers at regional, national, and international conferences. She also served as an Editorial Board member of the International Journal of Music Education (2016-2022) and presently serves as an ECME Commissioner. Elissa has been an active ECME/ISME member since 2002.
