About
The Popular Music Education Special Interest Group held its first meeting at the 2016 ISME World Conference in Glasgow. Its primary vision is to bring together and advance thinking and research on the education of popular musicians and the practice of popular music, and to raise awareness of this important and growing discipline, under the broad ISME umbrella of music education.
Mission
The mission of the Popular Music Education SIG is to provide a home for scholarship, practice and discussion from around the world. It is to celebrate and reflect upon participation, inclusion, aspiration, learning, excellence and advocacy in all forms of popular music education.
Aim
Popular music education, while growing rapidly in breadth and scope, is still in its developmental stages in terms of disciplinary and collegiate identity, both within the context of ISME and within its theoretical and applied context. The PME SIG provides a central focal point through which developments can be disseminated .
Activity
Members of the PME SIG organise, engage in, disseminate information about and raise awareness of other popular music education conferences, publications and forums. This includes a close relationship with the Association for Popular Music Education and contributing to its journal. It also curates a sequence of ISME world conference presentations that are designed to further the aim of disseminating developments in popular music education.
